Equine Nutrition

At Wrenwood, we take feeding your horse to the next level. The best step you can take to ensure a healthy and great equine partner is feeding a balanced, complete and healthful diet.

Optimal nutrition is one of the best ways to help your horse enjoy good health and well-being. Understanding equine nutritional requirements is our specialty and knowing how to formulate the very best combination of forage, feed and supplements is what we do.  A great way to ensure a healthy and great performing horse is feeding a balanced, complete and healthful diet.

Equine diets should be forage based.  The amount of forage fed daily should be approximately 2% of your horse’s body weight.  That is 20 to 22 pounds of hay per day for an average sized horse.  The hay must be routinely analyzed for nutritional content using a reliable lab like Equi-Analytical (https://equi-analytical.com/).  Knowing the nutrients provided in the forage portion of the diet allows you to determine what additional protein, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes are necessary to provide optimal nutritional support.  All these factors must then be balanced and provided in the proper ratios to facilitate absorption and bio-availability.  Each horse is different so considerations are carefully made for age, size, level of work, pregnancy, lactation, growth and other factors.

Horses should be routinely monitored for good health and vitality.  Extra attention should be given to general well-being, body condition, temperament, performance, and overall appearance.  Regular inspection of coat condition and hoof quality should be performed often.  Improving the diet for your horse can likely be the most cost effective and beneficial treatment for a host of equine issues.  It makes much more sense to properly support your horse with correct, balanced nutrition than using various supplement products that might not address your horses needs correctly or adequately.  More is not always better and over-supplementing can be as harmful as under-supplementing.  Use a nutrition program that is targeted, accurate and based on scientifically accurate equine feeding guidelines.
